Exchange, gaining experience, being accompanied on a day to day basis by mentors, having support from other women in politics: This is how female candidates for the 2024 local elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo are getting prepared. International contributors from the Governance-Fonds Network join in for virtual sessions.

Women in Politics are experiencing similar difficulties, be it in DRC, Germany or Cameroon. And sharing these experiences across regions and continents is very crucial for strengthening women´s participation

The first virtual meeting has been enriched by two German women leaders, Cécile Weidhofer and Karoline Klose. Cécile's talk focused on political communication, particularly as women, while Karoline's presentation was about pooling women's strengths to achieve greater political power and transform institutions. She also talked about the importance of feminist politics at local level; in other words, how local institutions can develop policies, create infrastructures and put resources at the service of gender equality and social justice (taking minorities into account).

The following session, the group was welcoming Dr. Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana, a former Member of the EU Parliament and vice-chair of the Committee on Development. She encouraged the women to believe in themselves. Starting her career as well as elected city council, she shared her similar and rich experiences with the women. One good advice was to focus on specific issues they want to change when elected and use that for the electoral campaign.

Background

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development funded Governance-Fonds and the German Foreign Office funded Project „Promotion de la démocratie locale et appui au dialogue social en RDC" are supporting women politicians in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on their electoral way for mayors and other local politician positions. 10 mentors from DRC are supporting them on a regular basis and the Cameroon based consultancy STRATEGIES! is providing trainings on relevant issues. Additionally, there are 4 virtual meetings with international contributors to share their experience as women in politics. It´s the second round now.
